World Golf Hall of Fame

By Teri Champigny

When you take your South Beach vacation, you will find that there are so many things to do in South Beach that you forget that there are attractions within driving distance that you really don’t want to miss since you are so close. One of those attractions is the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Florida. If you are a golfing enthusiast, this is one side trip that you really don’t want to miss.

Traveling to St. Augustine will take you less than three hours by car and seeing the World Golf Hall of Fame is worth every mile of that trip. The World Golf hall of Fame is unique among sports halls of fame in that the one facility serves as a show case for both men and women golfers who have earned the right to be have been inducted.

What you will find is permanent exhibits that are focused on individual players as well as an encompassing exhibit about the history of golf and how it has evolved. There are always temporary exhibits that change regularly. You never know just what you will be treated to.

The World Golf Hall of Fame itself has evolved over the years. It didn’t start out in St. Augustine, Florida but rather in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The World Golf Hall of Fame is actually the result of several merges of golf halls of fame that were scattered about the country.

There are five categories into which new members are inducted. Those five categories are: PGA Tour/Champions Tour, LPGA Tour, International, Lifetime Achievement and Veterans.

All of the categories are interesting and the exhibits will keep you enthralled for hours but one of the unique categories in the World Golf Hall of Fame is the Lifetime Achievement category. Those inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in this category are not inducted based upon their ability to play golf (although some of them were very good players) but rather the induction is based upon their contribution to the sport of golfing.

One of the more interesting members of the World Golf Hall of Fame in the Lifetime Achievement award category is the late, great comedienne Bob Hope. Bob Hope loved many sports but he was above all an avid golfer. He played golf with nearly every American president fro Eisenhower to George W. Bush. He often used a golf club as an on-stage prop. The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic is named for him.

Yes, it is true that you are not very likely to run out of things to entertain you on your vacation to South Beach. We couldn’t agree more. There are all of those lovely white sand beaches that need to laid on and all of those delightful water sports, the world class shopping, the restaurants and the unparalleled nightlife that need to be partaken of but within just a few hours drive there is the World Golf Hall of Fame, as well.

If you are an avid golfer, an avid golfing fan or happen to be married to one, the World Golf Hall of Fame is a must-see item on your South Beach Vacation.
